This study was done to try to clarify the relationship between double contours and craniofacial morphology. The study sample included 56 pre-orthodontic patients with signs and symptoms of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. A comparison of craniofacial structures was done on 32 subjects with bilateral condylar bone change (BBC group: 28 female and 4 male) and 24 subjects with no condylar bone change (NBC group: 21 female and 3 male). The BBC showed significantly greater antegonial and ramus notch depths, as well as significantly more retruded mandibles, shorter ramus heights, and larger mandibular plane angles than the NBC. BBC subjects with bilateral double contours showed significantly more retruded mandibles, larger antegonial notch depth, and shorter lengths from the Sella to the Articulare than BBC subjects with no double contours. The study showed that important relationships exist between the presence of double contours and mandibular morphology and TMJ position. 相似文献

Internal capsule (IC) stimulation has been used clinically to alleviate central pain. However, the neuronal mechanisms underlying pain relief by IC stimulation are poorly understood. In order to elucidate the analgesic mechanism, the effect of IC conditioning stimulation on nociceptive neurons in the rat medullary dorsal horn was investigated in the present study. Rats were anaesthetized with N(2)O-O(2) (2:1) and 0.5% halothane and were immobilized with pancuronium bromide. Two kinds of nociceptive neurons, wide dynamic range (WDR) and nociceptive specific (NS) neurons, responding to noxious stimulations of the face and oral structures were recorded in the trigeminal caudal nucleus and the medial reticular subnuclei. A test stimulus with a single rectangular pulse (2ms in duration, 5-70V) was applied to the centre of the receptive field. Responses in 55.9% of the WDR neurons and in 60% of the NS neurons were inhibited by conditioning stimuli to the ipsilateral IC with trains of 33 pulses (100-300microA) at 330Hz. The percents of peak inhibitory effects on WDR neurons and NS neurons were 78.1+/-25.0% (n=19) and 89.0+/-13.6% (n=3), respectively. The inhibitory effect continued for conditioning-test intervals of up to 500ms. Effective sites for conditioning stimulation were concentrated in the lateral side of the IC. These findings suggest that modulation of nociceptive transmission by IC stimulation occurs at second-order neurons via a presynaptic phenomenon by corticofugal fibers in the IC. 相似文献

Imaging studies have reported on the relationship between temporomandibular joint (TMJ) degeneration and facial deformity. These studies have suggested that mandibular growth is affected by TMJ degeneration, resulting in altered skeletal structure as mandibular retrusion. However, there are very few longitudinal case reports on TMJ osteoarthrosis (OA). Progressive open bite occurred in an adolescent patient with TMJ OA. Cephalometric analysis showed a downward and backward rotated mandible, and a labial inclination of the upper incisor. Magnetic resonance imaging showed internal derangement without reduction and erosion in the right and the left condyles. Although the cause of open bite is unclear in this case, tongue thrusting, and internal derangements in the temporomandibular joint were suspected as causes of the open bite. 相似文献

Periodontal-ligament-associated protein-1 (PLAP-1) is preferentially expressed in the periodontal ligament (PDL) and encodes a novel small leucine-rich repeat proteoglycan protein. PLAP-1 expression was induced during the course of cytodifferentiation of PDL cells into mineralized-tissue-forming cells in vitro, suggesting the possible involvement of PLAP-1 in the mineralization process of PDL cells. In this study, we hypothesized that PLAP-1 expression is regulated by mineralization-related cytokines in PDL cells. PLAP-1 expression was clearly down-regulated when the cytodifferentiation of PDL cells was reversibly inhibited by fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2). In contrast, bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) enhanced PLAP-1 expression. Up-regulation of PLAP-1 expression by BMP-2 was confirmed at the protein level when PDL cells were immunostained with anti-PLAP-1 polyclonal antibody. These results revealed the cytokine-mediated regulatory mechanisms of PLAP-1 expression and suggested that PLAP-1 expression may be associated with the process of cytodifferentiation of PDL cells. 相似文献

This study was undertaken to evaluate the relationship between bilateral condylar bone change (BCBC) and mandibular morphology. Thirty Japanese women with BCBC as diagnosed from computed tomographic scans were compared to 2 control groups: 26 Class I and 25 Class II Japanese women. All cephalograms were traced and scanned, and 14 homologous landmarks were digitized. Coordinates were used for cephalometric analysis, Procrustes analysis, Euclidean distance matrix analysis (EDMA), and thin-plate spline (TPS) analysis. Comparison of the cephalometric data for the BCBC and Class I groups revealed significant shrinkage in the condylar process and ramus height, in addition to a shorter body length. The centroid size showed that BCBC mean geometric forms were smaller than those of Class I and Class II. The landmark morphology of the BCBC group differed from both Class I and Class II, as shown by the residuals (P < .001). EDMA showed expansion of infradentale-pogonion (9.9%) and along the anterior slope height of the condyle (28.6%), while the posterior slope height decreased (21.6%). The vertical ramus height (gonioncondylion) also decreased by 11.8% in comparison to Class I. Compared to Class II, BCBC ramus height was shorter by 8.9%, condylar width decreased 13.7%, and the posterior condylar slope was 22% shorter. TPS analysis showed increased antegonial notching, a vertically expanded symphysis, and a collapsed and more horizontal condyle in the BCBC group. The combination of the above methods was very helpful in assessing mandibular morphology and showed that BCBC might be related not only to changes in the condyle, but may dictate changes in the rest of the mandible as well. 相似文献

The expression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) was investigated in 67 cases of odontogenic cysts and 35 cases of odontogenic tumors using monoclonal antibody to EGFR (Biomarker, Israel) to determine the presence and significance of this transmembrane growth factor receptor. The cystic epithelial cells of odontogenic cystic lesions (keratocyst 60%; primordial cyst 75%; radicular cyst 35%; and follicular cyst 47.4%) were positive to EGFR staining. Cytochemical characterization of EGFR in those cystic epithelium was cell membrane positive type as in the normal epithelium. No expression of EGFR was found in the odontogenic tumors. This diversity of EGFR represents no binding activity of EGF, or loss of EGFR in the tumor cell upon EGFR mediated growth in odontogenic tumors was suggested a different tumor cell growth factor status or microenvironment in cell proliferation mechanism at the cellular level in cysts and tumors of odontogenic origin. 相似文献

In the present study, the compositional changes and knoop hardness of the cavity floor prepared by Er,Cr:YSGG laser irradiation was compared with that of the conventional bur cavity. Fifteen laser and 15 bur cavities were cross-sectioned, and subjected to atomic analysis by SEM-EDX and knoop hardness test. Statistical analyses were performed using the Mann-Whitney U-test; a value of P < 0.01 was considered significant. Surface characteristics of the prepared cavities were also investigated by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the quantities of Ca (Ca weight %) and P (P weight %) were increased significantly in the laser cavity floor but no significant differences were found between the Ca/P ratio and knoop hardness number of laser and bur cavities. The SEM observation revealed that the lased cavity surface was irregular and there was also the absence of a smear layer; the orifice of dentinal tubules was exposed. Er,Cr:YSGG laser device is considered as one of the most effective and safe devices for cavity preparation because of its many advantages. This includes easy delivery system, minimal thermal damage to the surrounding tissues, minimal thermal-induced changes of dental hard tissue compositions, and favourable surface characteristic. 相似文献

This case report presents application of a resin composite veneered fixed partial denture utilized as a definitive prosthesis for a bilateral cleft palate patient after stable occlusion had been established orthodontically.
